SafeStraw™ Thin Liquid SafeStraw™, Blue, 12/bx
The SafeStraw™ (Bionix®) (1510) is a professional-grade clinical feeding aid specifically engineered for the management of oral-stage dysphagia and aspiration risk. This specialized drinking tool is designed to provide a limited, consistent bolus of thin liquids (such as water, tea, or juice) by restricting the volume of fluid a patient can draw in a single sip. This mechanical flow-control technology makes it an essential instrument for Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and clinicians managing patients with impaired swallow reflexes or neurological deficits.
This specific configuration is the Blue Thin Liquid model, optimized for high-visibility identification within institutional settings. The internal valve mechanism automatically limits the bolus to approximately 1 teaspoon (5mL) per sip, preventing the rapid over-filling of the oral cavity that often leads to aspiration. The unit comes in a box of 12 individually packaged, reusable straws (single-patient use), providing a comprehensive solution for therapeutic dining in acute care, rehabilitation, and long-term care environments.
Please note: All prices are for boxes.
Key Features
Bolus-Control Technology: Functions seamlessly as a mechanical flow-restrictor to prevent the delivery of large fluid volumes that the patient cannot safely manage.
Aspiration Risk Mitigation: Provides a critical safety intervention by ensuring a consistent, manageable sip size for patients with "thin liquid" orders.
High-Visibility Blue Color: Designed for easy clinical identification and to distinguish the thin-liquid version from thickened-liquid models.
Versatile Container Compatibility: Outfitted with a flexible plug that allows the straw to be used with a wide variety of cups, mugs, and juice containers.
BPA and Latex-Free Construction: Provides a stable, biocompatible tool for patients with sensitivities to plasticizers or natural rubber.
Ideal Clinical Applications
Institutional Dysphagia Management: Optimized for patients within institutional care suites who require fluid volume restriction but do not yet require thickened liquids.
Neurological Rehabilitation Support: Specifically indicated for patients recovering from stroke (CVA), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), or managing Parkinson’s disease.
Post-Surgical Hydration: Provides a secure, controlled delivery method for patients transitioning back to oral intake following prolonged intubation or NPO status.
Speech-Language Therapy: Used in clinical settings as a therapeutic training tool to help patients re-learn bolus control and safe swallowing techniques.
Geriatric Care Facilities: Allows for safer, more independent drinking for residents in assisted living or skilled nursing who have diminished swallow coordination.

Contraindications
Do not use this straw with thickened liquids (Nectar or Honey consistency). The internal valve is only calibrated for thin fluids; using thickened liquids will clog the mechanism and render the device non-functional.
Do not use this device with carbonated beverages, as the gas release can interfere with the valve’s ability to limit the bolus correctly.
Warnings & Precautions
Ensure the SafeStraw™ is thoroughly cleaned between uses according to facility infection control protocols. Although dishwasher safe, the internal valve must be flushed to prevent bacterial growth.
Always monitor the patient during initial use to ensure they are successfully clearing the 5mL bolus before attempting subsequent sips.
Monitor the straw for signs of wear or cracking. If the external casing or internal valve shows signs of damage, the unit must be replaced immediately to maintain the safety integrity of the fluid delivery.
This device is designed for single-patient use only. Sharing straws between patients is a high-risk cross-contamination hazard and is strictly prohibited in clinical environments.
WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including Diisononyl Phthalate (DINP), which is known to the State of California to cause cancer. For more information, go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
